Stunning Fireplace Transformation in Ditton

Another busy day for the Everwarm Fires team! Today, we had the pleasure of completing a fantastic fireplace transformation for a customer in Ditton, Maidstone.

With the weather still feeling chilly, there is nothing quite like the promise of a roaring fire to make a house feel like a home. This project was all about taking a tired, empty builder’s opening and turning it into a stunning, modern focal point for the living room.

The Before and After Transformation

As you can see from the image below, the original space required significant preparation. It was a standard brick opening that needed careful clearing and structural work to ensure it was ready to house a high-efficiency wood burning stove safely.

New lintel, brickwork and PVA.

The result, however, speaks for itself.

Quality Materials for a Premium Finish

For this installation, the details were everything. We wanted to create a contrast between rustic textures and sleek finishes.

• The Chamber: We lined the interior of the fireplace chamber with beautiful slate split face tiles. These tiles offer wonderful depth and a natural, rugged texture that catches the light from the fire perfectly. They provide a contemporary backdrop that really makes the black stove pop.

• The Hearth: To ground the installation, we fitted a substantial 30mm honed granite hearth. Honed granite has a matte finish rather than a high shine, giving it a sophisticated, contemporary look that is incredibly durable and practical for a working fireplace.

We are thrilled with the final outcome, and more importantly, the homeowners are delighted to have their new stove up and running on the same day.

Chimney Safety Tips for Maidstone Homeowners

As we settle into our homes in Maidstone, we look ahead to the comfort of a warm fire. It is easy to overlook the engine that makes it all possible: your chimney. You need to focus on chimney safety. This applies whether you live in a Victorian terrace in the town center or in a new build in Allington. Even if you own a character property in Bearsted, it is not just about cleanliness. It is about protecting your family and your home.

In this post, we’ll cover why regular chimney sweeping is vital for Maidstone homeowners. We will discuss the specific risks to look out for in the Kent area. Lastly, we will explain how to stay compliant with UK safety standards.

Why Chimney Safety is Non-Negotiable

Many homeowners assume that if their fire lights, their chimney is fine. Unfortunately, the dangers are often invisible until it is too late.

• The Risk of Chimney Fires: The gradual build-up of soot is highly flammable. Creosote, a tar-like by-product of burning wood, also poses a fire risk. Without regular cleaning, a stray spark can ignite this residue. This can cause a chimney fire that can spread to the rest of your property.

• Carbon Monoxide (The Silent Killer): A blocked flue doesn’t just stop smoke from escaping. It can also force dangerous gases back into your living room. Carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless and colorless. A professional sweep ensures your flue is clear, allowing these gases to vent safely.

• Insurance Validity: Did you know many home insurance policies in the UK are invalid? You must prove your chimney has been swept by a certified professional. This includes professionals like a HETAS or Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps member.

Local Hazards: Bird Nesting in Kent

Living in the “Garden of England” means we share our environment with plenty of wildlife. In Maidstone and surrounding villages like Loose and Detling, Jackdaws are notorious for building nests in chimneys.

• The Law: The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 prohibits the destruction or removal of an active bird’s nest. This applies during the nesting season, which is typically from March to August.

• The Danger: A nest can completely block your flue. If you try to light a fire under a blocked flue, you risk immediate smoke inhalation and fire.

• The Solution: If you suspect a nest, do not light your fire. Call a professional right away. We can install bird guards to prevent them from returning once the nest is legally removed.

How Often Should You Sweep Your Chimney?

According to UK industry standards and HETAS recommendations, the frequency depends on what you burn:

• Wood: Quarterly when in use (at least twice a year).

• Bituminous Coal: Twice a year.

• Smokeless Coal: At least once a year.

• Oil and Gas: Once a year (yes, even gas flues can get blocked by cobwebs or debris!).

The Impact of Kent Weather

Our local weather in Kent can be damp. Moisture mixing with soot creates acids that can eat away at masonry and chimney liners. Regular sweeping removes the soot, reducing this corrosion and extending the life of your chimney stack.

Finding a Trusted Chimney Sweep in Maidstone

When looking for a “chimney sweep in Maidstone,” make sure you are choosing a certified professional. A quick “brush and vac” isn’t enough. A professional service should include:

1. A visual inspection of the stack and pot.

2. The use of modern power-sweeping technology or traditional rods depending on your flue.

3. A smoke draw test to guarantee the chimney is venting correctly.

4. An official certificate of sweeping (vital for your insurance).

Conclusion

Don’t wait for the cold snap to book your sweep. September to January is the busiest time for sweeps across Kent. Booking in the spring or summer ensures your home is safe and ready the moment the temperature drops.

If you live in Maidstone, Barming, Weavering, or anywhere in the surrounding ME postcode areas, focus on your safety today. A clean chimney is a safe chimney.

Wood Burner Installation in East Malling

We were delighted to be working in East Malling this week, bringing some much-needed warmth to a lovely local home.

For this project, the client chose the Stovax Huntingdon. This is a fantastic stove that perfectly blends traditional Gothic styling with modern, high-efficiency heating. It’s a real timeless piece that suits both period properties and modern homes looking for a bit of character.

To complement the stove, the Everwarm Fires team installed a sleek 20mm honed granite hearth. We love using honed granite; the matte finish gives a softer, more contemporary look than polished stone, and it really lets the cast iron of the stove take center stage.

We have a return visit booked soon to fit the matching granite slips to complete the opening, but the transformation is already huge. Another clean, professional install by the team!
