Is Your Wood Burner Hiding a Dangerous Secret?

Bad Install

We all love that cozy, crackling glow of a wood-burning stove on a chilly evening. But behind that warmth, there’s a lot of technical “know-how” required to keep your home safe. Today, we’re sharing a quick cautionary tale about why professional installation isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity.

The Upside-Down Danger

Take a look at this recent find from the field. It might look like a simple mistake, but someone actually installed this chimney liner upside down.

While it might seem like a minor “oops,” installing a liner incorrectly creates a serious domino effect of problems:

• Soot Traps: When a liner is the wrong way up, the ridges inside catch soot and creosote rather than letting them slide away.

• Cleaning Roadblocks: When it comes time to sweep your chimney, that trapped soot has nowhere to go.

• Fire Risk: All that trapped debris is highly flammable, leading to a much higher risk of a dangerous chimney fire.

• Liner Breakdown: Your equipment won’t last. An upside-down liner will deteriorate in no time at all, costing you more in the long run.

Why HETAS Matters

This is exactly why we always shout it from the rooftops: Always ensure your installations are carried out by a HETAS-certified professional. HETAS is the official body recognized by the government to approve biomass and solid fuel heating appliances. When you go with a certified pro, you’re getting peace of mind that every joint, seal, and liner direction is exactly where it should be.

Pro Tip: Don’t gamble with your home’s safety. A “cheap” installation can become very expensive (and dangerous) very quickly.

Stunning Fireplace Transformation in Ditton

Another busy day for the Everwarm Fires team! Today, we had the pleasure of completing a fantastic fireplace transformation for a customer in Ditton, Maidstone.

With the weather still feeling chilly, there is nothing quite like the promise of a roaring fire to make a house feel like a home. This project was all about taking a tired, empty builder’s opening and turning it into a stunning, modern focal point for the living room.

The Before and After Transformation

As you can see from the image below, the original space required significant preparation. It was a standard brick opening that needed careful clearing and structural work to ensure it was ready to house a high-efficiency wood burning stove safely.

Original opening.
New lintel, brickwork and PVA.

The result, however, speaks for itself.

Quality Materials for a Premium Finish

For this installation, the details were everything. We wanted to create a contrast between rustic textures and sleek finishes.

• The Chamber: We lined the interior of the fireplace chamber with beautiful slate split face tiles. These tiles offer wonderful depth and a natural, rugged texture that catches the light from the fire perfectly. They provide a contemporary backdrop that really makes the black stove pop.

• The Hearth: To ground the installation, we fitted a substantial 30mm honed granite hearth. Honed granite has a matte finish rather than a high shine, giving it a sophisticated, contemporary look that is incredibly durable and practical for a working fireplace.

We are thrilled with the final outcome, and more importantly, the homeowners are delighted to have their new stove up and running on the same day.
