If the glass on your stove is forever going black, you’re not alone — it’s one of the questions we hear most often. The short answer is that black glass means the fire isn’t burning the way it should. Nine times out of ten it comes down to wet wood, or running the stove too low and slow.
Wet wood is usually to blame
Most of the dirty glass problems we come across start with the logs. Wood that hasn’t been left to dry properly is full of moisture, and instead of burning clean it smoulders and throws off thick, sticky smoke. That smoke is what coats the glass black.
If the logs you’re burning feel heavy and damp, that’s a fair sign they’re not dry enough. Look for the Ready to Burn logo on your bags, and keep your wood stacked somewhere dry with air moving around it. We’ve written a fuller guide on choosing the right wood to burn.
Running the fire too low
The other common cause is turning the stove right down and letting it smoulder. A fire needs air to burn hot and clean. Shut all the air off and the flames die back, the temperature drops, and you get that lazy, smoky burn that dirties the glass within an evening.
Try burning the stove hot enough to keep a proper flame going. If you want the fire to last longer, build it up with dry logs rather than strangling the air supply.
Keeping the glass clean
A few simple habits keep the glass clear:
- Burn seasoned wood with the Ready to Burn mark
- Give the stove enough air for a lively flame
- Avoid leaving it smouldering overnight
- When the stove is cold, wipe the glass with a damp cloth and a little stove glass cleaner — never put cold water on hot glass
When it’s a sign of something else
If you’re doing all of that and the glass still blackens quickly, or the fire keeps smoking back into the room, the problem may be up the chimney — a restricted flue or a blocked cowl. Soot building up in the chimney is a genuine fire risk, so it’s worth getting it swept and checked properly before you keep using it.
